Supporting Local Communities

Making a Difference to local communities across the world

At CHEP Middle East & North Africa we recognise that our business and our people are a key part of the communities in which we operate.  With a focus on engaging with the community in the areas of environment, sustainability and education we actively encourage colleagues to volunteer up to three days of paid volunteer leave each year.  As an additional incentive to anyone who uses all three days of their paid volunteer leave, they will receive an additional annual leave day during that calendar year.

Working with charities and other voluntary organisations the range of activities our people get involved with is diverse.  But there is a common theme – and that is one of fun and community spirit!  Here is just a snapshot of some of the charities that have benefitted from the activities our people got involved with in the past year:

CHEP MENA Developing Young Minds

In 2016 CHEP Middle East launched its flagship Corporate Social Responsibility program brand-named CHEP MENA Developing Young Minds.  With a focus on education across the primary, secondary and tertiary levels, CHEP volunteers can participate in a broad range of activities from the CHEP led teaching activity with Grade 1 and 2 students – providing support with word recognition & reading skills; the CHEP Work Experience Program for Grade 11 & 12 students from local not-for-profit schools – providing an insight into the CHEP world of Supply Chain and various career paths options for students who are soon to be completing their high school journey; Guest Lectures activities at local universities such as the University of Dubai and the University of Wollongong – providing insightful lectures to the students across Business, Marketing & Supply Chain majors.

Mimi Choo, Founder of Gift of Education, has high praise of the work done together with the CHEP MENA Developing Young Minds Program:  “I have been working with many corporate CSR teams for the last 8 years but I have never encountered this level of commitment from one single company!  The CHEP MENA Developing Young Minds program has provided us not only the highest number of volunteers for our projects but also the highest number of benefiting students as well. There are several highlights I need to mention, but the most praised work they did for our students was and still is 'The Work Experience' project. CHEP MENA Developing Young Minds program invited our senior students into the CHEP workplace and gave the students an amazing opportunity to witness real life hands on work experience that they will forever cherish. We are so grateful for your support and hard work for our young minds and, most of all, the beautiful spirit your volunteers bring to our schools which is definitely highly contagious!

Dubai Sustainable Supply Chain Forum

CHEP is the lead company of the Dubai Chamber Sustainability Network Task Force on sustainable supply chain and  as a part of it , the Dubai Sustainable Supply Chain Forum (DSSCF) was launched in October 2016 in partnership with Dubai Chamber’s Centre for Responsible Business. CHEP has been providing ongoing support to forum members by sharing best practices and facilitating collaboration projects.

The forum is modelled on best practices from the Efficient Consumer Response (ECR) and the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA). The forum  aims to promote sustainable collaboration across the supply chain; advocate for changes in  local policies and regulation; reduce carbon footprint; and implement measurable sustainability KPIs to ensure increased efficiency throughout the local supply chain industry.

The Dubai Chamber Sustainability Network, a promoter of industry excellence in sustainability, is the most relevant and valuable platform for senior supply chain executives to enhance the strategic impact of their supply chain systems and processes.  The Network provides an ideal environment in which industry leaders can discuss, important issues and challenges facing supply chain companies.

In partnership with CHEP the Sustainability Network has hosted workshops and seminars which bring key stakeholders together to collaborate on matters such as: Transport Collaboration & Vehicle Turnaround Time; Unit Load Standards & Vehicle Fill Rate; and Transportation of Food & Non-Food categories, among other issues.

Dr. Belaid Rettab, Senior Director of the Economic Research & Sustainable Business Development Sector at Dubai Chamber said: “The Chamber’s Centre for Responsible Business has a long history of working with CHEP on the Dubai Chamber Sustainability Network and the Dubai Sustainable Supply Chain Forum, which has encouraged the adoption of more responsible practices within the industry. The forum has highlighted important issues facing supply chain companies, while it also complements Dubai Chamber’s efforts to raise sustainability standards within the local business community and support the Emirate’s transition to a green economy.”

Goumbook – Give-A-Ghaf Tree

In 2011 Goumbook launched their flagship “Give a Ghaf” Tree Planting Programme to raise public awareness about the local indigenous Ghaf tree and its historical values to nature and the local communities, while encouraging people to plant indigenous trees and raising awareness on water scarcity in the Dubai desert environment.  With the nursery managed by Greenworks in Al Barari, a lush greenery oasis in Dubai that is part of a unique eco-conscious development, CHEP has been supporting the sustainable initiatives of Goumbook since 2014 with our CHEP volunteers sharing the same passion for nature, plants and environmental sustainability.  CHEP has donated hundreds of CHEP pallets, to raise the seedling Ghaf trees off the ground which has significantly increased the survival rate of the planting programme, as the root systems which grow into the ground soil are no longer damaged when the pots are raised off the ground at the nursery.

Tatianna Antonelli, who is the founder and managing director for Goumbook, has commended CHEP’s support over the years:  “CHEP has been supporting Goumbook and the Give a Ghaf Tree Planting Program since 2014 and we have always been impressed with their commitment to making a difference in the community.  We highly benefit from the enthusiasm of the CHEP employees who regularly volunteer their time with us and we were able to bring our Ghaf saplings survival rate up by 20% using the CHEP pallets provided to raise the pots from the sand, avoiding the propagation of the roots.  As a Social Enterprise we believe that partnerships can empower each and every one of us to play a role in the conservation of the ecosystem in which we evolve and we consider CHEP as valuable partner for our initiatives.”
