Full acceptance by German retailers paves way for sustainable export

More cost-efficient, safer and sustainable export to Germany

Exporting to Germany from the Benelux region is by no means a new concept. Germany is the largest export market for the Benelux countries. And now that CHEP pallets are fully accepted by German retailers, the transportation of goods can be even more cost-efficient, safer and sustainable.

False perception of Germany as white wood country?

Germany is the biggest buyer of Dutch and Belgium products - a total of 23% of the Dutch export market is destined for Germany. The percentage of Belgian goods exported to Germany is 18%, in comparison to 14% sent to France. Exporting to Germany must therefore be an important consideration for manufacturers in the Benelux countries.

It is also important to note that the food market in Germany is concentrated to a limited number of retailers, with the seven largest supermarket chains accounting for 97% of the total market.

However, many Benelux-based manufacturers still deliver their goods on white exchange pallets. The perception of the situation is that pallet pooling has not yet penetrated the German market. However, this is not fully true.

Pallet pooling is growing in Germany

CHEP can now assure full acceptance among all German retailers.

Pooling is becoming more popular every year, in many countries, including Germany. CHEP pallets, for example, are now accepted in the distribution centres of the largest German retailers. Consequently, the import of CHEP euro pallets from the Benelux increased by 35% in 2020 compared to 2019, and by 7% from the whole of Europe (source: ‘Lieferstrukturen Report CHEP Deutschland’).

In May 2019, one of the largest discounters in Europe switched to CHEP pallet pooling to take advantage of the economic and – above all – sustainability benefits of the share & reuse system. CHEP can now assure full acceptance among all German retailers.

Economy and sustainability go hand in hand
When you send your goods to a German retailer on CHEP pallets, CHEP picks up the used pallets, brings them to one of the 23 local service centres for inspection, and then puts the pallets back into circulation through its network.

The benefits of the system for you

  • A consistent quality of pallets;
  • Reduced risk of damage to your products;
  • Return shipments are eliminated;
  • Fewer discussions about outstanding pallet balances;
  • Simplified processes and no more unnecessary administration;
  • Drastic reductions in the consumption of natural raw materials.

So it’s not just your business that benefits from this, but our entire planet too.
