How Brambles' Zero Waste World Program creates a working environment where values and opportunity can align

Can you describe the ZWW program and how it impacts sustainability?

The Zero Waste World Program is a unique, customer-centric department focused on collaboration and co-innovation to deliver solutions that extend beyond the waste reduction that our typical core business solutions provide. Our Zero Waste World teams are focused specifically on packaging, transport and supply chain inefficiencies to co-design new schemes our customers to meet what we know to be pressing sustainability challenges such as climate warming, waste eradication and decarbonation.

Why did you choose a sustainability-focused career path, and how do CHEP’s efforts align with your personal and professional values?

There comes a moment in your life when it matters to have an alignment between your core values & what you do for a living – especially given the number of hours we all dedicate to our work.

I wanted to put my time, my skills and experience at the service of strengthening the circular economy, to take part into something big that will contribute to more sustainable, innovative business practices and to build a coalition of allies to accelerate that change.

How does ZWW support CHEP and Brambles’ global sustainability goals?

Zero Waste World supports our companies’ sustainability goals in many ways. It helps us reduce energy consumption, promote carbon neutrality, becoming a 100% zero waste company by 2025, and it’s paving the path towards not just net-zero accomplishments but regenerative supply chain goals. It also contributes to Brambles’ thought leadership positioning as a leading and innovative company willing to collaborate to maximize the environmental impact of supply chain activities.

How are you looking to expand the program in the future?

Given our success after 3 years in Europe and North America, we’ll be launching Zero Waste World in other regions such as Latin America, Southeast Asia and Australia, and in India, the Middle East and parts of Africa. So, pretty much global!

How does the ZWW approach affect your personal consumption choices/behaviors outside of CHEP?

Naturally, I have decided to “evangelize” our family & friends by sharing my knowledge and encouraging them to apply the principles of the circular economy at home. For example, some steps I take and recommend are to refuse purchasing goods that are overly packaged, to reduce my household waste by composting, and lowering the carbon footprint of my food consumption by cooking more. I’ve switched to green energy transport where possible and shortened the sourcing and shopping distances of my goods. I’ve even started testing some regenerative agriculture by gardening our own tomatoes, peppers, culinary herbs bred through our compost. These, admittedly, are not easy changes but they play a part in the wider picture of environmental responsibility.

Which career opportunities do you foresee in the growing ZWW environment at CHEP, either for yourself or others?

Brambles always adapts to new opportunities and the market. Digitization and our sustainability goals have accelerated our company development, and hybrid working positions will be implemented and are also here to stay.

What would you tell other professionals looking to follow a values-based career path about working at CHEP?

If you are concerned by the world not being able to meet its targets and continuing to harm the planet, or whether businesses will find the right solutions in time to face climate challenges, or simply wondering how best to contribute in your day-to-day job with an impact, consider us. CHEP is a pioneer of the circular economy with 70 years of experience in operating a share & re-use business model. And, we’re willing and well equipped to pioneer regenerative supply chains to significantly accelerate the shift. It’s an exciting and planet-positive place to work!
