HENKEL and CAPSA FOOD to reduce empty kilometres and carbon emissions thanks to CHEP’s Collaborative Transportation Solutions

The two companies will share a duo trailer on a common route, saving up to 115 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year

Madrid, Spain, 16 March 2021 - CHEP, the FMCG and retail end-to-end supply chain specialist, has demonstrated its commitment to reducing carbon emissions by orchestrating a transport collaboration project between the global chemical and consumer goods company Henkel, and CAPSA FOOD, the leading company in the Spanish dairy market.

The project is part of CHEP’s Collaborative Transport Solutions, a logistics optimisation programme that combines the company’s unique visibility over millions of movements of its customers with the power of Big Data to identify synergies and opportunities to share transport both between customers and with CHEP. The programme has been running for six years and involves more than 220 of CHEP’s customers in Europe.

In this case, the transport is shared via a duo trailer, a combination of a single truck towing two standard trailers, considered to be the largest road transport solution in Europe. It has a length of 31.75 metres, and the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by an estimated 25% to 30% per trip compared with the same freight moved on traditional trucks.

Eugenio Vila, Purchasing Logistics South Europe at Henkel, says: "Being part of this project represents an exciting step towards logistic collaboration for our business. The duo trailer allows us to reduce carbon emissions while transporting twice as much load in one truck than any other conventional means, so this solution will further optimise our transportation lanes.”

Through this collaboration, Henkel and CAPSA FOOD will share the duo trailer for three roundtrips per week for shipments and deliveries made on the route between Madrid and Catalonia. On each journey, the duo-trailer is filled with the products of one company, and with those of the other on the return trip. With a capacity for 66 European-sized pallet spaces and 48 tonnes, the duo trailer can reduce 250,000 empty kilometres per year, which is approximately 115 tonnes less CO2 emitted into the atmosphere.

Adrián Fariña, Transport Manager at CAPSA FOOD, says: “Developing a culture of collaboration within FMCG companies is key in a world challenged by an ever-growing demand and the imperative to reduce our environmental footprint, which has never been so strong.”

CHEP’s Collaborative Transport Solutions are part of its Zero Waste World Programme (ZWW), a working collaboration that brings together leading retailers and manufacturers to create smarter and more sustainable supply chains. Besides eradicating empty transport miles, ZWW also focuses on eliminating physical waste and cutting out supply chain inefficiencies through digitalisation.

Michael Gierloff, Director of Transportation at CHEP Europe, commented: "We’re thrilled that the duo trailer project is delivering such promising results. We are committed to advancing circular supply chains through our products, solutions and customer collaborations and have set ourselves the goal to extend our collaborative projects to more partners around the world.”
