Pallet pooling (rental withing the pallet fund) is truly sustainable logistic solution in terms of environmental concern: according to our research, if the major beer vendors in the Czech Republic switched from buying “white” pallets to pooling, they would save 1, 427 tons of CO2 in one year. This much CO2 is released by the giant A380 airliner when flying around the equator.
The trend towards sustainable development is confirmed as well by the topic of sustainability and circular economy that this year appeared for the first time at the prestigious conference Retail Summit. Mr. Juan José Freijo, Global Head of Sustainability from Brambles(parent company of CHEP CZ), was a key note speaker in this year's Sustainability Section to break the myths about sustainability. During his speeches, he often mentions the rule called 1-10-100: " If you do something on your own inside your four walls, you probably have an environmental impact of one, it’s one unit. If you do something with a single supplier or customer, then you probably have an impact that is 10 times bigger. And if you're smart enough to put in place an initiative that goes across the whole supply chain, from the very beginning to the very end, normally you multiply the effect by a 100 order of magnitude. "
For this reason, we have decided to give a speech during this year's Retail Summit and challenge manufactures and retailers to collaborate towards the sustainable world. Above, you can watch the video-recording of Juan José Freijo´s speech above with the answers on why and how to approach the circular economy from the business point of view.
What do you need to consider to become a sustainable company? Our parent company, Brambles, publishes the Sustainability Review every year, describing the key circular strategies mentioned in the video above.
To lead a company that cares about the environment, is not just a corporate cliché or a temporary trend. It is becoming more and more inevitable to choose this path. Pressure is coming from the consumers, the public sector, as well as from the business community and investors. Last year CEO of Black Rock sent an email to the businesses saying, "Your company must have a purpose, or we might exit you."
It is up to you whether you take sustainability as a cost to avoid or use it to your advantage to enhance your efficiency and long-term sustainable profit while helping the planet.
