Unilever reduces the annual CO2 emissions associated with the use of pallets by 285 tonnes

Thanks to the long-term use of CHEP pallet pooling, Unilever has reduced the amount of CO2 emissions from the use of pallets in its supply chain by 285 tonnes per year. In just one year, it prevented the generation of 24 tonnes of waste. This is the equivalent of more than 2 million takeaway cups of coffee.

Using pallets from the CHEP shared pool has helped Unilever save more than 133 tonnes of wood, equivalent to the amount of wood from 238 trees.

Unilever uses CHEP pallets for 95% of its customers

This data confirms the advantages offered by CHEP over alternative methods of pallet management, such as white wood exchange or the use of non-returnable disposable pallets.

After 17 years of using CHEP pallets, the numbers confirm that for us this is the simplest solution. The potential (of pallet pooling) in the Czech Republic is huge. And it is in my interest that as many companies as possible decide to use pallet pooling. The more of us there are, the more positive effects on the environment can be expected.

Pavel Hampejs Supply Chain Manager of Unilever

Unilever works closely with the retail chain PENNY Market in the pallet management system using CHEP pooling.

Total flow of all CHEP pallets from Unilever amounts to 300,000 pieces. The flow of pallets from the PENNY side reaches almost half a million CHEP pallets. Pooling in transactions between the supplier and the retailer brings mutual benefits and not only ensures efficiency savings, but also eliminates the hidden costs associated with pallet management.

This system of cooperation also significantly reduces empty transport miles and transport costs. It optimizes logistics processes and reduces CO2 emissions. Unilever uses CHEP pallets mainly for transportation of food, cosmetics and cleaning products. This year, however, Unilever plans to start using CHEP pallets for ice cream distribution as well.
