Relieving supply chain headaches: a prescription for success

In 2015, Goliard made the decision to find a better, smoother-running way to transport its goods. It joined CHEP’s managed pooling service to improve the performance, sustainability and safety of its supply chain.

How CHEP relieved Goliard’s supply chain headaches

The Business

Goliard was founded in 1991 and was one of the first companies in Poland to produce egg pasta in the traditional way. Today it sells a range of pastas and sauces, and has been working with its Italian partner Pasta Zara for ten years.

The Challenge

As a company, Goliard is growing, and has begun to export to Germany, Ukraine and the US, among others. But its growth was being jeopardised by the unreliability of the white wood pallet system. In 2015, the company took the decision to find a better, smoother-running way to transport its goods.

The Answer

With CHEP’s managed pooling service, Goliard rents and shares high-quality pallets, instead of needing to own, maintain, store and track them. This has improved the performance, sustainability and safety of its supply chain.

The hidden costs of the white pallet system

On-time deliveries are essential to Goliard’s business. So an unsatisfactory pallet-management system could put that in danger – a common problem in the FMCG industry. Goliard had tried outsourcing its white pallet management, but that didn’t solve problems like the continual need to replace broken pallets or those that get diverted to the black market. “Polish companies can incur losses of thousands of złotys a month using the white pallet system,” explains Kinga Di Salvo, CHEP’s Country General Manager for Poland and the Baltics. “One problem is incorrectly classified pallets. A company will buy pallets classified as ‘new’, but find that they are damaged, or of such poor quality that they need replacing quickly.”

Transparent costs and international expertise

The decision to work with CHEP immediately resolved these expensive issues. Because CHEP pallets are so distinctive in appearance, it’s difficult to remove them from the CHEP system and use them illicitly. And due to CHEP’s inspection and repair system, the pallets are always of a very high quality. There is also no question of hidden costs: CHEP’s services are transparently costed and meet its clients’ needs precisely.

Grzegorz Nicpoń, Goliard’s Trade and Marketing Director, highlights CHEP’s international expertise as another plus point. “CHEP definitely facilitates our relationships with customers outside Poland and with our Italian partner. Working with CHEP means we no longer have to manage many of the very complicated aspects of the supply chain, so we can focus on our goals and concentrate more on other facets of expanding the business.”

Pooling: the way to a smaller environmental footprint

Another important consideration for Goliard was CHEP’s commitment to sustainability. It is not simply that CHEP pallets are built from wood sourced from sustainable forests and are repaired and recycled: pooling, by its nature, shares resources and is an inherently sustainable business model. In addition, CHEP encourages innovative transport collaboration between its customers to reduce carbon emissions.
