CHEP Spain has received the first-ever Digital Innovation prize at the 2018 ASTER Awards.

On 5 June CHEP Spain won the 2018 ASTER Award for Digital Innovation. These awards are organised by the ESIC Business School (Escuela Superior de Ingenieros Comerciales, meaning Higher School of Business Engineers) and have been taking place for 36 years. The aim of the awards is to strengthen the links between the business school’s students and local businesses.

CHEP Spain was chosen as the winner by a jury of highly respected professionals.

The jury chose CHEP because of its innovative collaboration projects with customers and the creation of the CHEP Retail Index. The CHEP Retail Index uses information from CHEP Spain’s 115 million pallet movements over the last five years to create a report on recent market trends. This helps our customers predict consumer demand and improve their planning and strategic decision-making.

The award was presented to CHEP Spain at a ceremony in Madrid, which took place alongside the graduation ceremony for the business school’s Madrid-based students. This was the first time that these awards had a Digital Innovation category, which was created to recognise companies that use technology in innovative ways.

This award is a great recognition of CHEP's commitment to innovation, which has gone from strength to strength over the past three years as our company transitioned from being a pallet supplier to becoming a strategic partner for our customers. Due to CHEP's unique position as the backbone of the supply chain, (95% of CHEP Spain’s customers are from the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods industry), and all the data it receives because of this, we can add value to our customers by helping them increase sales, reduce costs and be more sustainable.

Bellpuig service centre celebrates 25th anniversary!

A very special event took place on 19 April in Spain to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Bellpuig service centre, which supports our Pallet and Automotive business units. The celebration was attended by all the service centre’s staff and many of our Southern Europe and Spanish senior leaders.

The history of Bellpuig

In the early 1990s, CHEP Spain had been operating for five years and was doubling in size every year. It relied heavily on its service centre in Montmelo, which was struggling to process all the pallets from Cataluña on top of the surplus of damaged pallets arriving from Madrid. The CHEP Spain Country Leadership Team proposed the creation of a new service centre near Bellpuig to solve the issue.

The construction of the Bellpuig plant started in 1992 and it repaired its first pallet on 13 April 1993. The service centre now processes 5.7 million KLTs (small automotive containers), 300,000 pallets repairs, 300,000 pallets inspections and 43,000 Foldable Large Containers (FLCs) every year.

Bellpuig had not had any accident during 10 years and currently they achieved 4 years without LTI’s again. Global Auditing Process (GAP) for safety, received a very impressive score of 96.8%! After 25 great years, Bellpuig aims to continue to improve in terms of safety, sustainability, quality and productivity.

CHEP hosts first customer transport collaboration event in Europe to optimise logistics networks

Affinity PetCare, CAPSA, GBfoods, HEINEKEN, Kimberly-Clark and Mahou-San Miguel, among others, work together to increase synergies, reduce costs and support sustainability.

Madrid, 7 May 2018 – As part of its review of supply chain development and transport collaboration opportunities, CHEP recently hosted its first-ever Transport Collaboration event with key customers in Madrid. Over 40 clients shared their experiences, views and new collaborative opportunities in a very fruitful network, setting the scene for the future.

Thanks to CHEP’s non-competitive relationship with customers, retailers and Logistics Service Provider (LSP) partners, as well as its strong customer collaboration and supply chain expertise across Europe, the company is in an ideal position to take on the role of the trustee, orchestrating broad-based transport collaboration as a neutral partner. A total of 5.5 million empty kilometres (the equivalent of 14 trips from Earth to the Moon) were avoided in Europe in the past year and 5,700 tonnes of CO2 emissions were prevented from going into the atmosphere.

Pere Joan Masso, CAPSA Supply Chain and Operations Director, said: “The Logistics Collaboration Programme delivers not only savings but also other intangible values derived from the cooperation with other companies, such as a positive impact on sustainability, increased negotiation power

and a better understanding of the market, flows and operators, along with the chance to learn from other supply chain models and explore new opportunities to collaborate.”

CHEP’s Transport Collaboration Programme was launched in Spain three years ago with the aim of creating efficiencies in a fragmented transportation market. Today, it is used by more than 50 customers in Spain and 220 customers across Europe. It helps clients share transport both with each other and with CHEP, while also helping them obtain improved transport services and use trucks more efficiently. In this way, customers avoid empty miles, optimise their logistical processes and, ultimately, significantly reduce their costs and environmental footprint.

This process is based on the integration of multiple members of one or more value chains into a single network - guaranteeing confidentiality - which requires smart, transparent and proven communication technologies. The coordination of CHEP as a trusted partner, along with its comprehensive, dynamic database, which covers over 18.5 million movements of goods every year and more than 1,2 million different routes, are what makes Transport Collaboration possible.

Andrés Sánchez, Supply Chain Director at Affinity PetCare, said: “CHEP plays a critical role as an experienced and respected partner in promoting collaboration and making it happen. Incorporating the voice of the customers in developing an optimal solution is critical, and CHEP has shown over the years that they listen to us.”

Michael Gierloff, Director of Transport Sourcing and Logistics Collaboration, CHEP Europe, said: “Developing a culture of collaboration within the companies is key to making this solution a success and solving the initial barriers of information sharing. Managing and protecting the confidentiality of the data we receive is the main pillar of our collaboration programme. All of the participants at this roundtable are the best proof of how well we respond to this challenge.”

The Transport Collaboration Programme will continue to deliver significant benefits, producing win-win scenarios for all parties involved in CHEP’s supply chain. With the growing trust from our clients, CHEP will keep connecting more partners and escalating the proven benefits of transport partnerships across Europe.

CHEP SPAIN and Mondelez present the biscuit aisles of the future!

Alimarket Gran Consumo, the annual industry conference hosted by Spanish retail and consumer focused news publishers Alimarket, is considered one of the most important events within the FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods) sector in Spain. For this year’s event, which took place on 8 March in Madrid, the theme was "The Moment of Transformation". It was attended by over 360 leaders from various consumer goods companies, such as Coca Cola, multinational foods distributor Campofrío, cosmetics company L’Oreal, home improvement brand Leroy Merlin and bulk sales company Costco.

This event was the perfect opportunity for CHEP Spain and Mondelez to introduce their partnership project. The joint presentation was given by Javier Dominguez, Country General Manager, CHEP Spain, and Otger Renom, Head of Customer Marketing and Strategy, Mondelez Iberia.

In the first part of the presentation, Javier Dominguez talked about the changes that CHEP Spain began to make in 2014 in order to become even more of a strategic partner for clients, manufacturers and retailers. "We want to ensure a collaboration that translates into more sales and efficiency for all," said Javier Dominguez. "The collaboration begins at the point of sale, by having appropriate stock, assortment flexibility, new sales space, packaging improvements and a simple process for replenishment. In some cases, customers have experienced an increase in sales of more than 35%.”

Otger Renom then took to the stage to explain how Mondelez’s collaboration with CHEP on Last Mile Solutions has increased biscuit sales. "The use of the quarter pallet dolly from CHEP allows us to improve the position of products, facilitate replenishment and reach sales we previously did not reach,” he said.

The project

With more stores and lower footfalls, brands need to stand out more to satisfy those increasingly fewer off line shoppers, who demand easy and fuss-free purchases. To overcome this challenge, CHEP and Mondelez are aiming to revolutionise biscuits aisles and improve sales by being more efficient and offering a new and exciting shopping experience. Together they want to convince retailers of the advantages of using quarter pallets and dollies in their stores. In order to achieve this, the Commercial, Marketing and Last Mile Solutions teams collaborated with Mondelez's Shopper Marketing teams to create a Virtual Reality programme to use on retailers. This programme shows why using CHEP Last Mile Solutions on biscuit aisles will increase sales and makes replenishment easier.

This innovative initiative will be a key factor in helping Mondelez achieve its biscuit sales goals. This is very important for Mondelez as biscuits are the fastest growing sector in the Spanish consumer goods market.

eDelivery 2017

The eDelivery conference (one of the largest e-commerce events in Europe) invited CHEP Spain to present our new supply chain innovations, such as Last Mile Solutions.

CHEP Spain took part in the eDelivery fair in Barcelona to increase brand awareness and foster cooperation with major supply chain partners. eDelivery brings together physical and online retailers and suppliers to debate important topics such as electronic logistics solutions and packaging and handling systems. It took place alongside the International Logistics and Handling Exhibition and had 300 speakers and over 34,000 attendees.

CHEP participated in the event in two ways:

  • Firstly, David Cuenca, Vice-President for Southern Europe, gave a presentation entitled 'Supply Chain: reinvent to survive', in which he spoke of the importance of innovation in supply chains, particularly in terms of Talent, Technology, Traceability and Retail. There were also presentations by other major companies, including Telefónica (Telecommunications), DIA (Retailer), Mercadona (Retailer) and Amazon.

"We had the opportunity to exchange views with the Chief Operating Officer of Amazon in Spain and we confirmed that he is solidly committed to Spain", said David. "Amazon’s plans for future growth are impressive and CHEP must stay by its side every step of the way. The event also highlighted the fact that Supply Chain technology is constantly evolving and that we must make clear our commitment to being part of this new era of innovation".

  • CHEP also sponsored the exhibition’s coffee break, during which attendees were able to test the Virtual Reality solution in order to see CHEP’s last mile solutions.

"It is clear that the online market will continue to grow at great speed", said Javier Domínguez, Country Manager General of CHEP Spain. "This is due to technological development, which increasingly enables companies to better meet the needs of the consumer. At the same time, it opens up a world of opportunities and challenges in terms of supply chain, and CHEP must play a leading role in developing new solutions and services".
