ALDI and CHEP streamline fresh supply chain

In early 2012, ALDI Australia announced it was looking for a one touch solution for its fresh produce offering, which would reduce hand stacking in store and deliver better quality through a reduction in handling. ALDI also wanted to enhance efficiencies within the supply chain for its suppliers in terms of crate optimisation for both packing and transportation purpose.

The benefit of working with CHEP on the development of the Gen 3 RPC was that it helped ALDI to achieve a one-touch solution and maximise efficiencies at various points in the supply chain.

A good working relationship with CHEP Australia facilitated a very ‘productive’ conversation that saw the Generation 3 Reusable Plastic Container (Gen 3 RPC) proposed as a possible solution.

Just over a year later ALDI Australia is the first to use CHEP’s new generation crate family, the Gen 3 RPC, which was developed in consultation with the retailer and industry and is positioned to become the industry standard fresh produce solution. The Gen 3 RPC delivers unprecedented efficiencies along the supply chain, from farm through to the retail store.

ALDI Australia National Logistics Director, Shane Hafiz, says: “The benefit of working with CHEP on the development of the Gen 3 RPC was that it helped ALDI to achieve a one-touch solution and maximise efficiencies at various points in the supply chain.

“Our efficient supply chain means our customers aren’t paying for unnecessary overheads.

“We believe that by standardising and simplifying as many operations as possible, we can keep costs low and pass these savings on to consumers in the form of everyday low prices.

“With the introduction of ALDI’s new fresh produce tables, which were designed to be compatible with the Gen 3 RPC, our customers will not only see a new look in the fresh produce section, but will enjoy an enhanced smarter shopping experience in terms of produce quality and ease of accessing produce. With the added benefits of better product rotation and less damage through the one touch solution, customers will continually see higher level of quality through less handling.

CHEP Australia and New Zealand President, Phillip Austin said: “The Gen 3 RPC family is a game changer. It’s not only an industry-wide solution, it offers world leading return logistics; with a folded height of 25mm, the Gen 3 RPC outperforms all other crates on the market by up to 29 per cent.”

The new RPC features globally best-in-class latching technology and is fully compatible with the previous generation crate and existing infrastructure.

Both growers and retailers will benefit from the reduced fold down height with up to 29 per cent more RPCs fitting into a truckload than previous generation crates, meaning fewer trucks will be required to transport an equivalent number of RPCs when empty.

The Gen 3 RPC family also offers sustainability benefits, at least equivalent to that of the previous generation crate. An independent lifecycle analysis of CHEP’s reusable plastic crate system conducted by RMIT in 2010 showed that compared with a single-use corrugated cardboard system, CHEP RPCs produced 70 per cent less greenhouse gas emissions, used 85 per cent less water and produced 95 per cent less solid waste to landfill even if the cardboard was recycled.

With an existing pool of more than four million RPCs, and a 10-year history supplying HACCP certified RPCs to the Australian fresh produce supply chain, CHEP is confident this new innovation will deliver ALDI and the industry increased value, efficiency and sustainability.
