FEBA and CHEP fight food waste in Romania

On 3rd November 2016 CHEP Romania and the European Federation of Food Banks (FEBA) held a launch event for the first food bank in Romania to be part of the FEBA network. With the latest United Nations reports showing that 40% of Romanians are at risk of poverty and social exclusion, this event was a chance to push further the public discussion on food waste between relevant authorities, companies in the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector, retailers, trade associations and Non-Governmental Organisations.

The food bank works is supported by local CHEP Team with expertise and know-how. CHEP Romania will now be advocating the implementation of food waste solutions in Romanian supply chains and identifying local partners which could join the project.

The scope of the project includes evaluating nonprofit organisations and analysing their needs for food and hygiene products. It also comprises partnerships with companies in the FMCG sector and identify food donors which could support the functioning of the food collection and distribution system. Additionally, the food bank owns a educational programme in several schools in Bucharest.
