CHEP uses ‘track and trace’ technology on its reusable pallets to increase efficiency in the supply chain

Smart devices installed in CHEP’s pallets and containers will offer its customers better visibility, control and security, while preventing asset loss

Lisbon, 24 of November 2021: CHEP, the supply chain solutions company and pooling leader, in partnership with BXB Digital, both companies belonging to Brambles group, has developed digital solutions based on Internet of Things that seek to increase the operational efficiency of their customers’ supply chains.

A set of CHEP's reusable pallets and containers have been equipped with track and trace devices across Southern Europe aimed to increase visibility over the platforms and the products transported on them, thus offering its customers (mainly FMCG producers) greater control and security, whilst protecting the pallets from being lost and hence taken out of the circular system that they constitute.

A total of 11 retailers and distributors in Spain, France, Italy and Portugal have participated in the trials, helping to detect inefficiencies and sources of asset loss within their supply chains. New trials are expected to start in Greece soon. “Thanks to CHEP's track and trace solution, we have increased control over our assets, and have gained security in our flows”, says Jürgen Dietz, Logistics Director at Spanish multinational hard-discount supermarket, DIA Group.

The built-in sensor devices collect information such as the location and condition of CHEP pallets and containers as they move through the supply chain, as well as product quality conditions, such as the temperature.

“Thanks to this collaboration project, we have end-to-end visibility of our distribution flows, allowing us to take actions aimed to improve the control and management of our pallets", says Alex Tello, Head of Pallets at logistics group Carreras.

Marco Moritsch, Senior Vice President, CHEP Southern Europe states "Combining our physical pallets with our digital solutions allows us to confirm exactly where a platform or product is located and provides valuable insight to proactively prevent future losses, damages and costs.

“The Internet of Things and digital solutions developed by our partner BXB Digital give us the opportunity to accurately map the global supply chain, identifying synergies and eliminating inefficiencies and bottlenecks. In the future, we want to reduce the administrative burden and use technology to simplify processes and provide our customers with full transparency.”

Devices incorporated in CHEP pallets and containers are certified in accordance with CE/EC requirements (evaluated to comply with European safety standards and other applicable regulations). The data collected by these devices can be used by CHEP to provide better customer support, track shipments of CHEP pallets and containers and to obtain aggregate statistical information about the supply chain which can serve as an added value to its customers.
