Making a Difference to Local Communities Across North America

At CHEP we recognize that our business and our people are key part of the communities in which we operate. With a focus on engaging with the community in the areas of the environment, sustainability and education we actively encourage colleagues to volunteer up to three days of paid volunteer leave each year.

Working with charities and other voluntary organizations the range of activities our people get involved with is diverse. But there is a common theme – and that is one of fun and community spirit!  Here is just a snapshot of some of the charities that have benefited from the activities our people got involved with in the past year:

Tour de Fresh

Tour de Fresh, is the first-of-its-kind, collaborative event that unites the most significant brands and influencers in the fresh produce industry for a three-day cycling event that raises funds to benefit the national Salad Bars to Schools initiative. The Salad Bars to Schools initiative has helped provide salad bars to over 5,000 schools benefitting 3 million children as a strategy for increasing children’s access to fresh fruits and vegetables every day at school.

CHEP actively participates with Tour de Fresh with sponsorship of an employee and various resources each year for this great industry event with our customers.

Ronald McDonald House

Did you know that 70% of Canadian families live outside a city with a children’s hospital? So when a child gets sick, they often have to travel hours to get treatment. Ronald McDonald Houses across Canada give families a place to stay close to the hospital where their child is being treated.

In July, CHEP employees across Canada came together to collect groceries and prepare meals for the families who are staying at Ronald McDonald House.

Greening of Detroit

Greening of Detroit focuses on enhancing the quality of life for Detroiters by re-purposing vacant land to create beautiful and productive green spaces.  The organization involves Detroiters in the process through community engagement, education and jobs. Each year, between 3,000 and 5,000 volunteers help plant trees, clean up parks, and work in farm gardens. There are plenty of opportunities to dig in and make a positive difference in Detroit.

Last August, a group of CHEP employees came together to plant and harvest vegetables at the Eastern Market Garden. Food grown by The Greening of Detroit is then either sold at the Market or sent to local food banks to feed hungry people in the community.
