Making a Difference to Local Communities Across South Africa

At CHEP South Africa we recognise that our business and our people are key parts of the communities in which we operate. With a focus on engaging with the community in the areas of the environment, sustainability and education we actively encourage colleagues to volunteer up to three days of paid volunteer leave each year.

Working with charities and other voluntary organisations the range of activities our people get involved with is diverse. But there is a common theme – and that is one of fun and community spirit!  Here is just a snapshot of some of the charities that have already benefited from our volunteers and support:

Each year CHEP South Africa colleagues use their volunteer days to compete for the coveted title of ‘Volunteer of the Year’.

FoodForward SA

FoodForward SA is a registered non-profit organisation that connects a world of waste to a world of need by re-using edible surplus food from manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers.

They provide rescued food to hundreds of beneficiary organisations that focus on important services such as Early Childhood Development, Youth Development and Women Empowerment, who in turn serve hundreds of thousands of vulnerable individuals daily throughout South Africa.

As part of Mandela Day 2017, 61 CHEP staff each volunteered 67 Minutes to help sort and pack donated food for the charity. But CHEP, in partnership with Pick n Pay, further donated equipment to facilitate the distribution of the donated food to various charities across SA, including

  • 40 Securtainers 
  • 150 Bins
  • 180 Lugs/Totes
  • 180 Pallets 

Richard Brasher, Group CEO Pick n Pay Retailers (Pty) Ltd, said: “With the support of our suppliers and service providers, as well as donations such as yours, we were able to collect over 130 tons of food. This food has been redistributed to 600 non-profit organisations and will provide over half a million meals to those who might otherwise go hungry. Thank you to everyone at CHEP for your contribution and we look forward to working with you again in the future."

Habitat for Humanity, SA

Habitat for Humanity South Africa is a non-profit organisation that believes that providing adequate and affordable shelter is the best way to fight poverty. They provide holistic interventions, bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope.

Over the last few years, CHEP has donated the funds and volunteers to build four houses across South Africa.

Moya Wolff, Head of Resource Development and Communications, Habitat for Humanity South Africa wrote: "A heartfelt THANK YOU on behalf of the Orange Farm Community for bringing your heart, hands and voice to build the Nation of Mandela’s dreams. It is rare for people today to give such a precious gift of hard work, time and genuine encouragement to a stranger."

Enactus South Africa

Enactus is an international nonprofit organisation dedicated to inspiring students to improve the world through entrepreneurial action. It provides a platform for teams of outstanding university students to create community development projects that put people’s own ingenuity and talents at the centre of improving their livelihoods. Guided by educators and supported by business leaders, Enactus students take the kind of entrepreneurial approach that empowers people to be a part of their own success. 

Over the last few years, CHEP senior management have coached Enactus students, while our business provided the platform and funding for them to turn their project ideas in life-changing reality.

Jurie Welman, President of CHEP Sub-Saharan Africa and Chairman of Enactus South Africa's board has this to say about our collaboration: "At CHEP we believe that both big corporations and single individuals have a unique role to play in bringing about meaningful transformation in South Africa. The social needs facing our country are substantial and it can only be successfully addressed when we work together. Therefore our community projects are designed to not only provide financial assistance to accredited charity organisations and needy schools, but also to utilise the skill and passion of our employees."

Lionsraw South Africa

Lionsraw is a movement that mobilises passionate football fans to be part of community improvement programmes across the globe. During the 2010 Soccer World Cup, 150 English football fans visited Durban, and one of their projects they initiated was the building of a primary school in the Valley of a Thousand Hills.

Over a few years, CHEP has partnered with Lionsraw to Build the Steven Davison Primary School, catering to children from Grade 1 to Grade 7. Our volunteers have physically build a great deal of the infrastructure and we are involved with them on an ongoing basis.

Ruth Duma, Development Manager at Lionsraw South Africa said: “We were asked by the local community to build a primary school in the area because there was no school for 6kms. This meant that the children were walking up a very steep hill to the nearest school every day. This road has no pedestrian sidewalks and is utilised by fast moving trucks, carrying heavy loads of sand up and down the hill. An average of six children died each year, as a result of being run over on this road.”
