From Cardboard Totes to Reusables: Reducing Waste & Risk in the Supply Chain

The Challenge -
Single-use cardboard containers required significant labor for assembly, handling, and disposal. These corrugate totes could not handle the final product weight and created a number of quality concerns in dairy facilities.

The Solution -
Replaced corrugate with CHEP’s reusable container trip rental program to create a simpler and cleaner operation, while ensuring product safety and quality.

Typical cardboard bins require bailing and disposal

This large US-based dairy company produces and distributes a variety of products to restaurants, grocery stores, schools, hospitals, and vending companies across the country. Many of their key products - including buttermilk, fruit-flavored drinks, sour cream, and coffee creamers - require the use of IBCs (Intermediate Bulk Containers) during their manufacturing process. While using cardboard containers to transport their bulk ingredients, this dairy manufacturer experienced the following costs and challenges:

  • Excessive labor to set up and tear down totes
  • Significant waste removal to dispose of cardboard
  • Mess in facilities due to cardboard and other debris
  • Food safety and quality concerns

Although they wanted to eliminate cardboard, the dairy manufacturer could not invest capital to purchase a fleet of their own reusable containers. Instead, they partnered with CHEP to implement a full-service trip rental program, which provides the operational benefits of reusables, with the "ship-it and forget-it" convenience of cardboard.
